OPITO Rigger Initial Training
Course Overview
The Rigger course is a mix of theoretical and practical sessions, during which delegates will be required to demonstrate their level of knowledge and understanding of the training programme content.

Course Content
By the end of the assessment, the delegate will have demonstrated the ability to;- Identify potential hazards associated with the lifting operation and implement control measures
- Plan the route for lifting and moving the load to minimise any risk to personnel and surroundings
- Communicate, discuss and ensure understanding of the prepared lifting plan and risk assessment
- Obtain the resources identified in the lifting plan required to move the load, following rigging loft procedures
- Carry out pre-use inspection of lifting equipment and lifting accessories
- Attach the lifting accessories to the load using industry best practice
- Install and position the lifting equipment for balanced weight distribution
- The candidate must be able to demonstrate that they know and understand
- The employer responsibilities under Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations
- The hazards associated with a lifting operation and the purpose of a risk assessment and lifting plan
The relevant roles of personnel involved in lifting operations, and typical reporting lines
- Load movement route planning methods and areas near the load where it is unsafe to stand
- Rigging principles, SWL, WLL and angles of lift and considerations to ensure load stability, security and weight distribution
More information
- Certification: An OPITO certificate will be issued upon successful course completion.
- Certificate validity (months): 32
- Target audience: All personnel interested in carrying out rigger operations
- Revalidation: The course must be revalidated every 32 months (usually by progressing to the OPITO Approved Rigger Competence Assessment) .
- Items to bring: Government Issued Photographic ID eg Driver Licence or Passport. Delegates must also bring their own safety boots.
- Health prerequisites: Due to certain aspects of the course being potentially physically demanding and/or stressful, delegates will be required to confirm their medical fitness & physical ability to participate on this course by completing our centre medical self-screening form prior to course commencement

Difference Between Stage 1, 2 and 3 Opito Rigger Training
Stage 1: Initial Training
Purpose: Introduces basic rigging principles and safety measures.
Duration: Typically 3 days.
Certification: OPITO Rigger Initial Training certificate (valid for 2 years).
Outcome: Prepares participants for supervised workplace experience.
Stage 2: Supervised Workplace Experience
Purpose: Provides hands-on experience in a real work environment.
Requirement: Completion of a logbook documenting supervised tasks.
Certification: No formal certification; completion allows progression to Stage 3.
Stage 3: Competence Assessment
Purpose: Assesses the candidate’s ability to perform rigging tasks.
Assessment: Includes practical evaluations and a written test (pass mark of 80%).
Certification: OPITO Rigger Competence Certificate (valid for 2 years).
Outcome: Certifies you to work independently as a rigger.
Stage 4: Reassessment of Competence
Purpose: Ensures ongoing competence in rigging practices.
Assessment: Similar to Stage 3, including practical evaluations and a written test (pass mark of 80%).
Certification: OPITO Reassessment Competence Certificate (valid for 2 years).
Outcome: Maintain your certifications validity to continue in the rigger role.
