3t’s Head of Apprenticeships David explains why businesses should consider taking on an apprentice

David Gillam knows first-hand how valuable apprenticeships are, having started his career as an apprentice himself. Now, as Head of Apprenticeships at 3t, David helps businesses understand the benefits apprenticeships offer.

In this Q&A, David shares his advice for businesses considering taking on an apprentice and how his team can help them through the process.

Tell us about your background and your role at 3t

My career started back in 2007 working on gas pipelines as an apprentice. Over the years, I’ve grown through different roles, from being a skills assessor to leading a team of assessors, and then moving into quality assurance. In 2023, I took on the role of Head of Apprenticeships at 3t.

In this role, my main job is to make sure our apprenticeship programs meet all our targets and run smoothly. This means supporting different training programs from start to finish – helping businesses bring on new apprentices and guiding them through the entire process.

What exactly is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is basically a paid job where you learn while you work. It’s a chance to gain real skills and experience in a chosen field. In safety-critical industries like construction and utilities, these programs are especially important. Apprentices get training from experts, mix classroom learning with hands-on experience, and get support every step of the way.

Who can apply for an apprenticeship?

Apprenticeship programs have changed a lot over the years. They’re no longer just for young people leaving school. They’re now open to anyone, whether you’re just starting out or looking for a new challenge mid-career.

And how can taking on an apprentice benefit a business?

It’s no secret that we’re seeing big skills gaps in key industries like water, power, and gas. There is a huge demand for more skilled workers – from welders, pipefitters to scaffolding. Apprenticeships can help fulfil that demand. By working with training providers like 3t, businesses can create programs that teach exactly the skills they need. It’s not just about learning – it’s about giving people the knowledge and practical experience to thrive in their role with them.

What might businesses not know about apprenticeships?

Some businesses might not realise how valuable apprentices can be. You’re not just getting someone to do a job, you’re bringing in someone who’s eager to learn, grow, and become a real part of your team, essentially playing a hands-on role in preparing your future workforce.

What advice would you give to anyone who is unsure about taking on an apprentice?

Don’t think hiring an apprentice is too complicated, expensive or not worth the effort – it’s easier than you think and there are countless benefits. Our team at 3t can support you through the process, from offering initial advice to helping you secure funding and providing training.
