Course Overview

This combined OPITO HERTM and OERTM training course is an intensive offshore firefighting and emergency response package including a wide variety of emergency scenarios.

The training provides the knowledge, understanding and skills to perform the role of a HERTM and OERTM safely and effectively.

Delegates will gain hands-on experience of emergency situations which could occur offshore including helideck and helicopter emergencies.

Prerequisites

Prerequisites Required!
In order to complete OPITO Combined OERTM and HERTM, delegates must hold:
    - A valid and in-date OPITO HOIT or Offshore Helideck Assistant (HDA) or Offshore Helicopter Landing Officer (HLA)
    - A valid and in-date OGUK Medical or Operator Approved Medical

Course Content

By the end of the course delegates will be able to;
- Understand the role and responsibilities of the HDA HERTM and OERTM
- Understand and identify different types of potential offshore emergencies and their hazards
- Understand firefighting equipment and fixed systems found on the installation and helideck
- Effectively respond to non-fire emergencies on both the installation and helideck
- Understand the general firefighting and safety goals and objectives during an emergency
- Understand helicopter construction and potential hazards around the helideck in emergency situations
- Effectively carry out firefighting techniques and tactics for different types of emergencies
- Effectively respond to directions from HLO or Team Leaders in emergency situations
- Understand and identify helicopter emergency systems and controls
- Effectively execute a rescue of casualties from a helicopter on its side
- Correctly select and operate a variety of portable firefighting equipment during an emergency incident
- Extinguish different types of fires using a variety of firefighting techniques
- Understand emergency response limitations on Normally Unmanned Installations
- Understand and identify human factors that could affect team members in installation and helideck emergencies
- Gain entry into the incident area safely to carry out search and rescue techniques during installation and helicopter emergencies
- Use Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus safely during an emergency incident
- Safely manage air consumption while wearing Breathing Apparatus for a safe egress from the incident area
- Extract casualties from hazardous areas using a variety of correct handling techniques

  • Certification: An OPITO certificate will be issued upon successful course completion.
  • Certificate validity (months): 24
  • Target audience: Emergency response personnel within an offshore environment.
  • Revalidation: The course must be revalidated every 2 years.
  • Items to bring: Government Issued Photographic ID eg Driver Licence or Passport.
  • Health prerequisites: Due to certain aspects of the course being potentially physically demanding and/or stressful, delegates will be required to confirm their medical fitness & physical ability to participate on this course by completing our centre medical self-screening form prior to course commencement
