Course Overview

The OPITO Helideck Operations Initial Training (HOIT) provides the knowledge, understanding and skills required to safely and effectively fulfil the roles of offshore helicopter landing officer (HLO) and offshore helideck assistant (HDA) OPITO HOIT is comprised of five modules including a combination of theoretical and practical training delivered over three days. The optional Transportation of Dangerous Goods by Air Awareness e-Learning course is 60 minutes and includes a final assessment of 30 questions.

Prerequisites

Prerequisites Required!
In order to complete OPITO Helideck Operations Initial Training (HOIT), delegates must hold:
    - A valid OGUK certificate - An IATA, HCA, CAA or state aviation approved dangerous goods awareness certification The FREE Transportation of Dangerous Goods by Air Awareness e-Learning course is included with this training to fulfil this prerequisite.

Course Content

Delegates completing this training course will be able to;
- Identify key parts of relevant helideck operations, regulations and guidelines
- Understand helideck physical characteristics, obstacle-free requirements and equipment and systems
- Understand meteorological requirements for offshore helideck operations
- Understand the role and responsibilities of the offshore HLO and HDA
- Understand the structure and terms in a typical pre-flight weather report and floating installation (or vessel) data required by helicopter pilot
- Perform checks for contamination, debris or damage before and after take-off
- Perform communication checks, checking helideck equipment status, safety nets, security and stowage of helideck equipment
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) during helicopter operations
- Ensure helideck teams are in required locations during helicopter operations
- Check passenger and freight manifests
- Effectively supervise HDAs during passenger, freight and baggage handling
- Comply with helideck protocols and procedures during helicopter operations
- Comply with helicopter danger area rules

  • Certification: An OPITO certificate will be issued upon successful course completion.
  • Target audience: Personnel appointed to the role of offshore helicopter landing officer (HLO) and/or offshore helideck sssistant (HDA)
  • Revalidation: There is no revalidation requirement for this training programme.
  • Items to bring: Government Issued Photographic ID eg Driver Licence or Passport.
  • Health prerequisites: Due to certain aspects of the course being potentially physically demanding and/or stressful, delegates will be required to confirm their medical fitness & physical ability to participate on this course by completing our centre medical self-screening form prior to course commencement.
